I hate winter.

It reminds me of Lucy: a friend I thought would be my friend forever stabbing me in the back. I can still feel the snow around me as I lay there, my heart stopping for a single second. The cold snaps at me, an icy reminder of what was, so I retreat back to the comforts of isolation and replay the way Mace snapped at me earlier on. (The spoon I stole from the Capitol twirls in my fingers, another reminder of the souls we left behind there in that arena.)

I see the hope leave their eyes. I watch them crumble underneath falsity that I've promised them, promises I know I can't keep. Perhaps they know I can't. But they still hold on. (I can't get their cries out of my head.) Years and years of torture. Years and years of lies because I want them to be happy in their last few days.

I can't lie anymore. Not to them. Not to Mace. Not to myself. They deserve the truth - we all do.

"I care!" I spit back at Mace, eyes not moving from the flames. My insides scream because I don't want to fight with my best friend, my family, my brother. I care too damn much. If I didn't, it wouldn't hurt year after year.

"I care." It's all I can manage because I'm terrified of breaking down. I'm being selfish but I can't help anyone if I'm broken myself.

"And it hurts."
