I turn to peak at my father as we enter the square where we would have to be separated. He clings into my hand tightly and mangoes a weak smile. “I’ll see you after, when we get home I will cook something special to celebrate.” I could hear the lack of confidence in his voice which urged me to smile slightly. “What? You? Cooking? Please,” I smile at him, sarcasm filling my voice. “Sounds good.” I add as I give him a quick hug and over to the place where the rest go the girls my age were begging herded.
I wasn't really nervous- I mean the actual chance of my name being called was slim to none- right? But despite myself my legs begin to shake making me feel weak at the knees. People around me begin to mumble to each other, I could hear the fear in the voices of the girls around me making me feel uncomfortable. I keep to myself, determined not to allow myself to snap nasty woods at the frightened animals.
After a moment a voice booms around us making the silents chatter die away until there was silence. The silence was an uncomfortable one, one that was reminding us that in a few monists two people were getting a free ticket to their death. The escort on the stage smiles at us before droning on about how the games were some sort of privilege it wad to be chosen to die. Whats a load of Bullshit, I think to myself, rolling my dark eyes. This whole things was a load of bullshit.
Finally, when the speech about glory and what not is over, the escort walks over to the large bowl that contained the names of all girls from the age of 12-18 in instruct six. Around me I could hear intakes of breath as they fingers surf the ball for a moment. It comes out of the ball with one slip of paper clothed into their pale hands. They walk to the microphone and a name that sounds oddly familiar echoes around my head. Alaska Summers. I knew that person, I might have to send flowers to the family- wait what. My whole mind is swept clean of any thoughts as I blankly look up at the stage in front of me. Was it always this big? I ask myself and watch as the people around me step away making it clear that I was the person that they were after. Hastily I take a deep breath before ducking my head and walking towards the stag- “I’ll do it. I’ll volunteer t be tribute.” The voice filters through my mmd and I stop mid step, my eyes glued to the ground in front of me as the person who just saved my life glides past me with a small reassuring smile, one that did not reach the eyes, eyes which were filled with so many different emotions, so many I couldn't even put my finger on the first one.
